Re: First Shows?
Tue, January 13, 2004 - 12:00 AMI would have to go with Escape from Paradise as that was the first show of his that I heard and I think it's brilliant. I listened to it again the other day and enjoyed every second of it. Great selections of music as well.
"Eye In The Sky" is another popular one. -

Fri, January 30, 2004 - 11:01 AMi've used white moon when in a lounge type setting. pilgrim 1&2 are good when you've got a victim in your car for a long roadtrip.

Mon, February 23, 2004 - 5:08 PMEye in the sky, Enterprising man, Escape from paradise, Fat man down, God only knows, Holy land, Green Cadillac, Iceland series, Bible salesman, Journal, Mercy now, Prison songs, The Wire, Warheads, The Queen of Puerto Rico, AND of course the ever classic "The Dictator" series. All of the Joe Frank monologues are great, but I've found these to be the best.

Re: First Shows?
Mon, February 23, 2004 - 7:51 PMTough question. Last time i tried to get a frend to listen I couldn't figure out one show so I unloaded about five tapes on the person which was an overload so I never got a really good response. I agree with you on Iceland 1. I also got pretty good response with Mountain Rain. My copy of Enterprising man is too poorly sounding but yeah. I've also given Hawaii since it's pretty short and funny and Karma 1 since the drama and trio of voices is likely to engage. -

Re: First Shows?
Wed, February 25, 2004 - 5:23 PMI agree that Enterprising Man and Escape from Paradise are nice introductions.
I usually start people off with Three Shingles. It was the first Joe Frank I ever heard, and certainly hooked me. I spent 55 minutes in a sweltering car outside of a music instrument rapair shop in Los Angeles waiting for the program to end. It's got a nice mix of the serious and the absurd.
I've also used Fat Man Down as a first program with moderate success. That Night seems like a nice 30 minute survey of some of Joe's styles, but I haven't tried it on anyone new yet.
Had a friend go nuts over Reprise while I just happened to be listening to it one day. Unfortunately, nothing else I offered him seemed to interest him nearly as much as that one program.
So far I can't say I've had much luck turning people onto Joe. Managed to get one friend to listen weekly for a bit and to join me for the 1998 LA performance, but that's about it. Not a rabid frankophile among them yet. -

Re: First Shows?
Sat, February 28, 2004 - 10:59 AMI have made a few converts to Joe but I think a lot of people don't have the attention span for him. I have to admit my mind often wanders while listening to some of his more sleep-making shows.
One show that is always well-received is Prayer. I'd really like to know more about this particular episode as the callers both sound sincerly like random people rather than the usual scripted crew.
